Shocking Engagement Photos: Couple's Dream Cruise Turns Sour with Horrendous Edits (2026)

Imagine planning the perfect proposal, a magical moment captured against the backdrop of a tropical paradise, only to have it transformed into something… well, monstrous. That's exactly what happened to one Queensland couple, and the resulting photos have left them feeling more like they'd stepped into a Shrek movie than a fairytale romance.

Jessica Latta and her partner, Jayden Bailey, embarked on what was supposed to be a dream Christmas cruise – their first major family holiday with their two children. Jayden planned to propose, and they hired a photographer to document the special moment. But instead of cherished memories, they received heavily edited photos that were, in Jessica's words, "horrendous."

"I can honestly say the edits were horrendous," Ms. Latta told Daily Mail. "My kids' faces were distorted. Their hairlines were blurred to the point they didn't even look real. And in the photo of our engagement where my partner is holding the ring, his finger looked like something out of Shrek."

The proposal took place on Christmas Eve during a stop at Lifou Island in New Caledonia, a picturesque location in the South Pacific. A photographer from the Carnival cruise line accompanied the family to ensure every moment was captured. Jessica recalls the photoshoot itself being wonderful. The photographer was patient, kind, and great with their toddler, who was having a rough day. When Jayden finally popped the question, it was a beautiful, emotional moment, and they believed it had been perfectly preserved.

On December 26th, the couple invested two hours meticulously selecting their photo package: 36 unedited images, a canvas print, and 15 professionally edited photos. They were promised the final, edited images would be delivered by midnight on the cruise's last night.

But here's where it gets controversial… The deadline passed without a peep. At around 4 AM on the final day, they received a USB drive containing the unedited photos, accompanied by a note stating the edited images would be emailed later that day. Days turned into what felt like an eternity.

"At that point, I thought we'd just spent $1800 on photos of our engagement and our first big family holiday, and we had nothing," Jessica lamented.

She contacted Carnival, only to receive an automated response advising it could take up to 45 days to hear back. (Can you imagine waiting that long for such important memories?) "No! I've spent $1800," she thought. "I'm not waiting 45 days for photos I've already paid for!"

Frustrated by the lack of response, Jessica turned to a Carnival social media page. Luckily, another passenger who had been on the same cruise stepped in and contacted the photographer directly. That night, Jessica finally received a link to the edited images… and that's when the real horror began.

The edited photos were nothing short of a disaster. Faces were distorted, features were blurred beyond recognition, and the overall quality was far below what they had expected – or paid for. Despite immediately voicing her concerns, Jessica has received no further communication from Carnival regarding her complaint.

And this is the part most people miss… To add insult to injury, the unedited images weren't much better. "Some were completely blown out, others were too dark. I can't do anything with them," she explained. So, essentially, they were left with nothing usable.

"This is our engagement. I waited 10 years for this," Jessica said, clearly devastated. "Something that was meant to be captured and remembered, and something we paid a lot of money for, has just not been delivered."

The couple had worked hard, saved diligently, and dreamed of sharing this special moment with their loved ones. Now, that dream has been tarnished by a cruise line that seemingly doesn't care.

Jessica is now sharing her story to warn other families about the potential pitfalls of cruise ship photography packages. "I don't know where to go from here," she confessed. "But no one should pay that kind of money and be left with nothing."

Daily Mail has contacted Carnival for comment, but as of this writing, they have not received a response.

This whole situation begs the question: Should cruise lines be held more accountable for the quality of services they provide, especially when it comes to capturing such significant life events? Have you ever had a similar experience with vacation photography? Share your thoughts in the comments below! Do you think Jessica is right to demand a full refund and perhaps even further compensation for the emotional distress? Or is this just an unfortunate incident that she should try to move past?
